A diagnosis and a pamphlet
May 2021, Sam was diagnosed with celiac disease. The doctor told him to eat gluten-free, gave him a pamphlet, and sent him on his way.
Two years, 15+ symptoms, and a whole lot of pain
It took a copious amount of effort to learn, make adjustments and explain to family/friends/coworkers. It took 2 years of trial, pain, and error, just to feel somewhat normal again.
Tania stepped in
His partner Tania, watched as he struggled to eat, lost the color in his skin, and changed. She went gluten-free in solidarity, helped read labels, and advocated for him at restaurants. They found themselves questioning why it's so hard and why isn't there more support.
The celiac community changed everything
They attended gluten-free events to meet celiacs, listen to their stories, and learn from them. The instant understanding, and trust when meeting a celiac (trauma-bonding) was validating and helped more than anything. Other celiac's experiences can help others, and celiacs love to help each other! This inspired Sam and Tania to build something to amplify the community.
Celiapp was born and keeps growing
They released Celiapp on November 2024. Currently the features are focused on shopping gluten-free, but will focus in other important areas such as parents of celiacs, medical professionals and more! Now, they attend as many events as possible to continue hearing stories, and build more features so life gets easier everyday for celiacs.
Our first features
We first focused on reducing the mental burden of shopping gluten-free for celiacs and their friends/families. These help newer celiacs the most, and we wanted to make them a priority.
- Photograph a label for detailed info on cross-contamination, manufacturing facility risks, brand safety, celiac reviews etc
- Photograph ingredient lists to see if they contain gluten
- Read guides including tips on alcohol, medicine, and ingredients
- Save your favourite products and share them with a web link with your friends and family
